Less unwanted mail
Stop the sender.
Then simplify your mail.
A different mailbox changes where an envelope arrives. Opt-outs, paperless delivery and direct sender requests tackle the source. Start there before paying to scan unwanted letters.
Match the action to the source.
- A company you know
- Ask it to stop marketing or switch eligible notices to paperless. Keep required notices reachable. Use direct sender requests →
- Prescreened offers or broad marketing
- Use the relevant official opt-out route below. Not every mailer uses the same list. Find the appropriate opt-out →
- Mail after buying a home
- Public property records can prompt advertising. Verify lender-looking requests independently. Make a homebuyer mail plan →

Match the action to the mail
- Statements you want digitally
- Use the known sender’s secure portal to check paperless options. Keep access and alerts working, and maintain a destination for paper-only letters and wanted originals. If this and ordinary home delivery solve the problem, you may need no paid mailbox.
- Your catalogs and marketing
- Ask the known sender to remove your address or change preferences. For broader marketing choices, the FTC points to DMAchoice; its online registration is an optional $6 purchase lasting ten years and covers most, not all, promotional mail. FTC: reducing unwanted mail.
- Prescreened credit or insurance offers
- The FTC directs consumers to OptOutPrescreen: five-year electronic opt-out or a permanent request completed with a signed mailed form. This targets those offers, not every mailing list. Read the official choices before providing personal details; MailboxCompare does not collect them.
Is this someone else’s mail?
For a former resident at your address, USPS says to mark “Not at this address” without obscuring the address and return it to the carrier or a collection box. For delivery to the wrong address, return it unmarked. Another person’s mail is not your marketing or disposal choice. Follow USPS: misdelivered and undeliverable mail.
Count arrivals separately from wanted contents
After sender changes take effect, measure a typical month: all billable incoming envelopes, the letters you want opened and pages in each. For example, 80 arriving letters with ten three-page openings means 80 arrivals, ten openings and 30 contents pages.
Ask the selected operator whether its junk-mail handling changes billable receiving counts or only sorts/disposes of mail. Disposal after arrival does not establish a waived receiving charge. An envelope preview also does not reveal the contents. Compare previews with contents access.
What would fewer arrivals change?
This hypothetical keeps one adult, one login, ten three-page openings each month and six monthly payments unchanged. Only billable arrivals fall from 80 to 30. It is a sensitivity example, not a prediction that opt-outs will remove 50 letters.
| Plan and researched scope | 80 arrivals / month | 30 arrivals / month | Difference / 6 months |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mailbox Forwarding · Basic 2885 Sanford Ave SW, Grandville, MI, 49418 | $134.70 | $89.70 | $45.00 lower |
| Traveling Mailbox · Basic Sanford, North Carolina primary processing address; premium intake surcharges excluded | $150.00 | $90.00 | $60.00 lower |
| BusinessAnywhere · Basic Monthly payment; exact address still needs selection. | $150.00 | $150.00 | No change |
The amounts open the stated example with that plan, address scope and monthly payment. They cover subscription, receiving and scans only; setup, verification, handling, postage, storage, taxes, deposits and exit are separate. A lower letter subtotal is not an overall service winner or complete invoice.
BusinessAnywhere’s unchanged result illustrates a receiving allowance that does not make this volume reduction cheaper; its exact address still needs selection. Other tiers can price differently. Use the existing tier comparison if your volume stays high.

Choose access and keep wanted originals
If you can collect the remaining letters at home or a reachable box, local delivery may suffice. A willing person can help with occasional mail; agree on permission, timing and originals. A paid service adds value when remote contents or regular handling matter. Compare a helper with a mail service · Choose the mail actions I need →.
Scan only what you need and set an originals routine within the selected storage window. Confirm supported collection/forwarding, item and destination acceptance, handling and postage before dispatch; arrange disposal deliberately. Plan wanted originals →. A scan may not replace required paper.
Moving, ongoing use and source scope
A new address is not an opt-out. USPS explains that undeliverable Marketing Mail is not automatically forwarded or returned; sender endorsements govern handling. Use the receiving-and-switching guide for a move, or plan continuity, renewals and an exit for longer use. No mailbox establishes residence or universal institution acceptance.
